Lead On 101 is a series of questions posed to administrators and faculty by the Office of Retention and Advising. This forum offers insight and practical advice about Marywood and managing your college career. This month features Karen E. Arscott, D.O., program director, Physician Assistant studies.
What would you like students to know –
about you?
I graduated from Marywood University in 1981 with a double major–Biology and Chemistry. I played softball for Marywood University and one of my biggest regrets is not playing softball my senior year.
I went to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after graduation and I am a true Osteopathic physician. It is my desire to teach others how to care for their fellow man in a compassionate way.
about your department or colleagues?
The PA Program is a wonderful program here at Marywood University. We work together to help the PA students learn from each other as well as the faculty. We are a team.
about Marywood?
Marywood University is a community. Everyone at Marywood University has a position of importance and we know we all need each other to best serve the students – who are the reason for our work at Marywood University. We truly care about each other and the students are part of that community.
What was the best advice you ever received when you were in college?
Don’t worry about what others are doing–worry about what you are doing and everything will be fine.
If you knew then what you know now, what would you have done differently as –
a college freshman?
I would have come to Marywood University my freshman year – I transferred in for my sophomore year and knew immediately that I belonged. I did not research my choices as well as I needed. The first college I went to was not a good fit – no community feeling.
an undergraduate student?
Once I transferred to Marywood University it was like a light bulb went off in my head. I had to do the assignments when they were assigned (with thought) and I would do fine. That was all I needed to do!
Work in a study group.
a graduate student?
Work in a study group earlier.
What steps should students take to make them successful in college?
Don’t get caught up in the whining and negativity of some of your peers. If there is a problem take the steps necessary to address the problem and move on. Don’t continue to complain about something in the past. Find a study group to work towards your goals – help each other even if you have the same goals.
What would you say to students who have not yet been able to choose a major?
Get out into the world and shadow people you think have interesting jobs. This is the easiest and best way to find what interests you the most. Don’t worry too much about finances – if you love what you are doing you will earn enough to live.
What advice would you give students who are having problems with academics?
Get a tutor! Right away! Ask for help – there are so many people willing to help without judging you.
Is there anything else you would like to say to students?
Be yourself-don’t try to be someone else. Don’t worry what other people are saying or doing. Only you know what you want to do with your life.
Find supportive friends-those are people who make you feel good about yourself.
Also, enjoy your college time!
