Marywood’s Women’s Field Hockey team, coached by Carly Chiampi (Head Coach) and Megan Bullock (Assistant Coach), have started the year off strong in hope for another successful season. Leading the team this year are Captains Kari Eiklor (Sr. Midfielder), Carrie Glenn (Sr. Defender), and Julie Dougherty (So. Midfielder).
Heading into the 2009 season, the Pacers thought they were going to have a rough road ahead of them replacing three out of there top four point leaders. However, Juniors, Brittany Beaton (Midfielder) and Maggie Brittain (Defender) quickly joined Senior Emily Wentzel on the score sheet for this season.
Joining these starters are Sophomore Dana Sweeney (Forward), and Freshmen Emily Eremo (Forward), Carly Bergston (Forward/Midfielder), and Megan Walsh (Defender). Also, starting for Marywood is Freshman goalie Jamie Bowman. Bowman has big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of Jessica Miller, who helped take the Pacers the conference playoffs in the 2008 season.
Also contributing to the success of the team are Senior Kristy Califano, and Freshmen Amber Mohrmann (Forward), Kathryn Varunok (Forward), and Jamie LaPointe (Goalie/Forward).
According to Captain Julie Dougherty, they look to achieve big things in the 2009 season. “As a team, we want to make playoffs again and make it to the CSAC Championship game.” With their season opening win against Moravian College, on Marywood’s brand new turf field, the Pacers seem to be heading in the right direction.
The Field Hockey team having almost half their players being Freshman had Marywood fans a little concerned. But Dougherty’s statement should give all their followers a sign of relief. “The freshmen have already made a huge impact on our team and continue to get stronger every practice and every game.”
The girls are continuing to work hard towards their goal of making the CSAC playoffs and hope everyone comes out to show their support.
