The Pacers showed up and showed out for their first home game of the season against Keystone College, securing the first win of the season. Marywood dominated in defense throughout the game, but the first quarter was a showdown.
On the first play of the game, Maria Tomada charged for a shot but was blocked by the defending goalie. Tomada would end up going for a total of seven shots. Junior Jordan Saybe scored the first goal for the Pacers early in the first quarter, her first of the season. Later in the first quarter, senior Corrin Hasty scored a penalty shot goal, to extend the Pacers lead.
The rest of the match, the Pacers made it look easy, dominating possession in the second half, outshooting the Giants five to one. Freshman Sabrina Frazer went on to save two goals from the Keystone Giants.
After the two early losses, the Pacers’ confidence could’ve been shattered. Coach Julie Trott spoke about how she felt to get that first victory.
“The girls did very well to get in the win column,” Trott said. “I’m very proud of them for winning our home opener.”
Senior Lany Straub spoke on how the first two games of the Pacers season didn’t define the team’s season outlook.
“We have been due for a win,” Straub said. “I think that we can absolutely do better, which is exciting moving forward.”
The Pacers secured the game with a 2-0 win, making the record of 1-2. Marywood will host St. John Fisher University on Sunday, Sept. 8 at noon.
