Xbox’s main franchise, “Halo,” just had its newest game announced, called “Halo Campaign Evolved.” It is a remake of the very first “Halo” game, “Combat Evolved,” on the most widely used game development engine, Unreal Engine 5.
“Halo Campaign Evolved” is also set to feature three brand new missions that take place before the events of “Halo Combat Evolved.” These missions are intended to explore the story behind Master Chief and Sargent Johnson.
Along with this, Halo Studios is adding some of the modern “Halo” weapons into this remake, such as the Battle Rifle, Energy Sword and the iconic Needle Rifle from “Halo Reach.” On top of these weapons being added, the controversial sprinting mechanic makes its return, but it can be toggled off in the settings.
But the major talking point about “Halo Campaign Evolved” is that it is releasing on Xbox’s main competitor, the PlayStation 5.
Xbox has been in the hot seat recently; just this year it raised its Game Pass subscription from $15 to $30 a month. Just this year alone, Microsoft has also raised the price of its consoles twice, and has laid off over nine thousand employees just this year alone.
Xbox has also pushed many of its exclusive titles to PlayStation in the past year, some of these games being “Sea of Thieves,” “Forza Horizon 5” and “Gears of War.”
Halo was truly the only exclusive Xbox had left, but now that it’s going to PlayStation 5, there really is no reason to pick an Xbox over the PlayStation.
But overall, I think “Halo” going to PlayStation 5 is the best decision for the franchise going forward. “Halo” is a shell of its former self; allowing “Halo” to be played by more gamers will only help the franchise rather than hurt it.
“Halo Campaign Evolved” has had no mention of multiplayer so far, but with weapons mentioned prior being added to the campaign, people are speculating that multiplayer will be announced later in the future.
“Halo Campaign Evolved” is currently set to release on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5 at some point in 2026.
