The National Football League (NFL) will host the 49th Super Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 1.
Both the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks enter the Super Bowl chasing NFL history.
The Patriots are no stranger to the spotlight having been in the Super Bowl six times throughout the 21st century. The last time the Patriots won was ten years ago, but if they win on Sunday it will be their fourth Vince Lombardi trophy.
There has been tension building up to the Super Bowl regarding the Patriots post game incident in the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The incident has been coined Deflate-Gate, because eleven of twelve game footballs did not meet the rules set by the NFL. The PSI (per square inch) levels were not at the twelve and a half to thirteen and a half inches required by the NFL.
Deflate-Gate is just one situations that makes the Patriots public enemy number one.
Jake Holzman, a junior digital media major, believes that despite all the noise surrounding Deflate-Gate the Patriots will leave Sunday victories.
“I believe the Patriots are going to be well prepared for the Super Bowl due to the strong leadership from Coach [Bill] Belichick to Tom Brady,” said Holzman.
According to ESPN Greg Gaerber article “Brady, Belichick pile up historic stats,” the Brady and Belichick combination have won 160 games together, the most by a coach and quarterback combination in NFL history.
Holzman also mentioned that Belichick does a great job of taking away the opposing teams strengths.
“The Seahawks offense is too one dimensional and depends to much on running back Marshawn Lynch, which I believe the Patriots defense will be able to stop,” added Holzman.
The Seahawks are trying to win their second Super Bowl since the franchise began in 1976. The Seahawks won Super Bowl 48 in 2014. Aside from winning their second Vince Lombardi trophy the Seahawks are attempting to be the first team to be a repeat Super Bowl winner since the Patriots won back to back championship in the 2004 to 2005 seasons. There are only six teams that have accomplished back to back wins.
Parker Reinecker, senior photography major, believes that the Seahawks will win back to back championships.
“At the end of the day defense wins championships and I think defensive back [Richard] Sherman will make an impact,” said Reinecker.
The vocal leader of the defense, Sherman, helps anchor the Seahawks secondary known as “Legion of Boom.” The self proclaimed nickname comes from their secondary hard-hitting, intimidating, trash talking attitude.
The Super Bowl will not be a disappointment when these two talented teams square off on Sunday.
So get your tailgating foods ready, and buckle up in a comfortable seat. This Super Bowl has all the potential to live up to the hype.
