The Student Government Association (SGA) wrote a letter to the Marywood community on Nov. 29 expressing support for the proposed core curriculum changes.

Following a plan outlined in the Strategic Resource Allocation (SRA) final report from last year, which analyzed the amount of resources allocated to different areas on campus, the Core Curriculum Revision Task Force conducted a study of the core curriculum throughout 2017.

According to the letter, members of SGA have been working with Associate Professor of English Dr. Helen Bittel and Provost Dr. Susan Turell, who are both co-chairs of the task force.

The proposed model for the core curriculum includes “threads” where students would take core courses related to a central theme and tie them together with a core capstone.

SGA members said in the letter they believe the proposed changes will “embrace the interdisciplinary value that is instilled in the students of Marywood,” and that students will “find a long-term focus on a theme exciting and enriching,” according to the letter.

The letter also states that SGA members believe this revised curriculum would be appealing to freshmen and transfer students.

The Core Curriculum Committee Task Force held open forums with faculty regarding the proposed modifications last semester, and SGA hosted a town hall to hear opinions from the student body.

These proposed changes to the core curriculum will take effect in 2019 if approved and only affect students arriving in the fall of 2019.

“We recognize there are logistics to be worked out, but feel the effort would be well worth the result,” the letter said.
