The Office of Global Education hopes to continue the increase in international students at Marywood

Marywood’s international student population is growing, a trend that the Office of Global Education hopes will continue for years to come.

For the Fall 2023 semester, 95 international students are enrolled at Marywood in a variety of academic programs. This is an increase from the 68 students that were enrolled in Fall 2022.

Associate Provost for Global Education Dr. David Kang explained that the international student experience is a well-rounded one, complete with not only academic opportunities, but opportunities to sample American culture, connect with students and faculty, and gain valuable career skills.

Dr. Kang hopes that eventually, 10% of the entire student population will be international students, and has made it his mission to help students from abroad experience a taste of the American Dream.

Marywood offers an Intensive English Program (IEP) available if students are interested in English reading, writing, speaking, grammar and research skills. According to Marywood’s website, this program prepares international students for the demands of the college courses at American universities.

In addition to career building and academic opportunities, international students can visit some of the United States’ biggest cities, such as New York City, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. during weekends and university holidays.

International students also live in residence halls on Marywood’s campus to provide them with an American university residential experience.

Sujin Doh, a junior nursing major from South Korea, describes her experience at Marywood as “fantastic.”

“The campus is incredibly beautiful, safe, and both the faculty and students are friendly. I felt the passion through conversations with them.” said Doh.

International nursing students have the chance to participate in field experiences at local Pennsylvania hospitals, which allows them to expand their education in a hands-on, practical way.

Doh explained how beneficial this -on training was for her.

“This experience has given me confidence in my major and has helped shape my future. And I was able to learn a lot through studying and practical training programs,” she said.
