Pacers captain Chris Valdes battles for the ball against Penn State Berks

The Marywood men’s soccer team traveled down to Reading to face off against Penn State Berks, in an entertaining and physical match last weekend. The Nittany Lions beat the Pacers 2-0.

The match was intense from the first whistle. The Lions sneaked in an early goal on a corner kick, with Midfielder Matt Holmes scoring on a deflection inside the near post in the seventh minute.

Both teams continued to press the ball with Pacers goalie Alex Russo making two crucial saves to keep the Pacers in the game.

Going into the second half both teams continued to push for another goal. Tempers began to spill over in the second half with the Pacers receiving two yellow cards and the Nittany Lions getting one.

In the 74th minute, the Lions got their second goal. With a cross sent into the eighteen, Midfielder Owen Love scored with a diving header to send the ball into the back of the net.

Several players from the Pacers declined to comment after the game.

Coach Matt Guinto was disappointed with the result of the game. “I thought we had a great week of training going into the game. We thought we could have gotten the result, but we weren’t sharp enough.”
