Baseball
The Marywood baseball team had a busy week, facing three different opponents, capping off with their final conference series versus Gwynedd Mercy.
The Pacers started off their week traveling to Drew University. After a scoreless three innings, Drew tallied the first run of the game. Two innings later, Drew jumped ahead, taking a commanding 5-0 lead. After digging themselves a major hole, the Pacers began to slowly crawl back. Down three runs going into the ninth inning, Marywood drove in two runs, but this wouldn’t be quite enough, falling short of a comeback, losing 6-5.
The following day, the Pacers traveled to finish their non-conference schedule with a matchup against Cortland. Both teams brought in a run, leading to a 1-1 tied game through four innings. Tristan Gatchalian ignited some fire under the Pacers with a solo shot over the left center fence. That would be the end of any momentum for Marywood, as they would follow with four scoreless innings. Marywood would not be able to outlast Cortland, losing 6-2.
Coming into the weekend, the Pacers were officially eliminated from the postseason but that didn’t derail their plans of winning. The Pacers traveled to Gwynedd Mercy on Friday to kick start their series, where they would come out on top with a 3-2 victory. Moving onto Saturday, Marywood hosted the Griffins for a double-header on Senior Day. Austin Bausman took the mound to start off the day for the Pacers. Bausman got the win, pitching five scoreless innings while also striking out six batters, leading to a 5-4 victory.
Heading into game two, Marywood did not lose a step. They tallied a run in each of the first two innings, taking a 2-0 lead. Heading into the fifth inning with 3-1 lead, the Pacers exploded, bringing in five runs, securing a comfortable margin. Things picked up for the Griffins during the seventh inning, bringing some life back with a four-run inning. Gwynedd Mercy ran out of gas after the seventh, leading to a series sweep and 8-5 win on senior day.
Seniors Adam Anderson, Collin Becker, AJ Giannetti, Brett Kugler and Christian Michak were honored in between games on Saturday for the careers that they had.
Men’s baseball ended the season with an overall 16-21 record, as well as a 5-10 conference record. Gatchalian led the squad with a .400 batting average, as well as being the team’s the homerun leader, tallying five on the season. Bausman led the pitching with a 3-2 record and a 3.46 ERA.
Softball
On Tuesday, the Pacers hosted SUNY-Delhi in their last non-conference matchup before conference playoffs. Game one was a consistent back and forth, with neither team tallying more than one run in each inning. The Pacers took their first lead in the fifth inning, 3-2. Marywood followed this by shutting out the Broncos in the remaining innings, while tacking on another run in the sixth. Tori Para set a Marywood single-season doubles record, recording her 22nd of the season.
The Pacers started off hot in game two, bringing three runs in the first inning. SUNY-Delhi responded with a couple runs themselves, tying the game at 3-3, through the first two. The Broncos kept their foot on the gas, tallying another three runs through five innings. Marywood fired back with three runs themselves, in the bottom of the fifth. The Pacers rode that wave through the sixth inning, sending another two runs home, taking a 9-6 lead. The Broncos didn’t have enough firepower in the final inning, bringing in only one run. Marywood would cap off the double-header with a 9-7 victory.
After facing Immaculata less than just one week ago, the Pacers saw themselves enduring another meeting with the Mighty Macs in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference playoffs.
The Mighty Macs came out hot, scoring two runs in the first inning. Marywood would remain with a zero on the scoreboard up until the fifth inning. The Pacers drove in two runs, finally getting the bats moving and tying the contest. The following innings became a defensive matchup, with both teams going scoreless, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Immaculata was able to convert off an RBI single, pushing their lead to 3-2 over the Pacers. Jessica Hanley hit a lead off single, giving Marywood a tying run on base. The Pacers were unable to capitalize, falling 3-2 to the Mighty Macs.
In game two of the conference tournament, Marywood saw themselves behind early. Neumann touched the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the second inning, and then another five runs in the third. The Pacers made a splash in the third as well, bringing in three runs. The Knights were able to tally another run during the fifth inning, before some bad weather swept through, causing a pause of the game. They would resume at the bottom of the fifth inning on Sunday morning. Even with the new day, the Pacers struggled pulling themselves back into the game, leading to a 12-6 victory for Neumann, and the end to Marywood’s season.
The Pacers season ended with a loss in the conference tournament, finishing with an even 19-19 record and a 7-3 conference record. Para led the charge at the plate with a .480 batting average as well as a .740 SLG%. Riley Marshall recorded the most homeruns with three on the season. Brianna Voyer captured the wins with 10 and has a 3.27 ERA on the season.
Men’s Track & Field
Marywood captured their sixth straight conference championship this past weekend.
Brandon Reed was the highlight for the Pacers, earning the Most Valuable Performer. He also broke the conference championship record in the long jump event. Reed secured a victory in the long jump at 21 feet, 10 ¼ inches, won the high jump event at 5 feet, 10 ¾ inches, and second place in the 100 dash at 11.2 seconds.
4×100 Relay
Tyler Hoysan, Brandon Reed, Mason Mendygral, and Nolan Kozera took the gold in the 4×100 relay with a time of 43.61 seconds.
4×400 Relay
John Russo, Raidan Francis, Brody Graff and JT Burke ran a 3:29.86 to take the gold in the 4×100. They would also hit the conference championship record books with their time.
Long Jump
Brandon Reed jumped 21 feet, 10 ¼ inches to finish first on the podium, breaking a conference championship record.
High Jump
Brandon Reed cleared 5 feet, 10 ¾ inches taking the gold in the high jump.
Shot Put
KC Nwokedi captured his first championship with a 38 feet, 6 inch throw.
Hammer Throw
KC Nwokedi took the silver with a 140-foot, 8-inch hammer throw, finishing third in Marywood history.
Discus
Josh Schriver placed second with a 121 foot, 8 inch throw, ranking third all-time for Marywood.
10K
Marywood dominated the 10k with the top five finishers all being Pacers. Joseph Cardillo led the charge, finishing with a time of 36:47.06. Will Canney, Jakob Seamans, James Modrovsky and Jack Baronski all followed, finishing second through fifth.
1,500
Jack Baronski won first place, finishing with a time of 4:06.21. Raidan Francis finished as the runner-up running a time of 4:11.63.
5k
Jack Baronski captured another gold medal with a 5k time of 16:43.21.
3,000 Steeplechase
Thomas Lee got the silver, with a 11:08.22 finish.
800
Raidan Francis secured another medal, placing second after a 1:59 flat in the 800.
Women’s Track & Field
The Women’s Track & Field squad had a successful weekend, finishing second in the conference championship, setting record numbers, as well as both school and conference championship records.
High Jump
Marissa Martin placed third in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 3 ¼ inches
Shot Put
Rosalyn Page secured the victory after a 39 foot, 3 ¼ inch throw.
Discus
Rosalyn Page had a fantastic showing in the discus, throwing for a conference championship record, 130 feet, 10 inches. Leah Zambetti placed third in the discus, throwing 116 feet, 4 inches.
10K
Lany Straub took gold in the 10k, running a 42:27.71.
5k
Lany Straub finished at the top of the podium with a 19:07.31 time.
Steeplechase
Lany Straub won first place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 12:52.57. Gabby Snee finished third with a 13:38.26 time.
Javelin
Leah Zambetti placed first in the javelin, throwing 113 feet, 9 inches.
400
Abby Megotz finished second in the 400, recording a time of 1:00.41, and setting a school record.
400 Hurdles
Abby Megotz made the podium, cliniching third place with a time of 1:24.41.
