The questions, “When will Jerry Jones retire?” and “When will the Dallas Cowboys win?” are often asked in the same sentence. Jerry Jones has been the owner, general manager and the president of the Dallas Cowboys since 1989. In the beginning, when Jerry was a young man, the team was unstoppable, winning three Super Bowls in the 1990s. With a roster that produced legends like Troy Aikman, Larry Allen and Emmitt Smith, anyone could have won those games. A team is only as good as its players.
Which leads to a point in saying, look at the Cowboys in today’s game. Dak Prescott cracks under pressure and doesn’t feel safe behind his offensive line that was ranked 16th in the league last season, making them a complete middle of the league, not being good and not being bad. We sit here and judge, but Jerry will not get rid of Dak, so it just brings him and the team down.
As well, since the 1997 season, the Cowboys cannot find a head coach that will actually make a difference. In that span, Dallas has a 4-12 playoff record. Dallas hasn’t had a head coach take them far into the playoffs (or even make it) since Barry Switzer, who alone went 5-2 in the span of three years.
Most Dallas fans today agree on one thing: the year Jones leaves will be our year. This is with the utmost respect for the effort and determination that the Jones family has put into the Star, but it is time to go. It is time to bring a mind that is more open to today’s world. It’s not the 1980s anymore and we need to stop acting like a million dollars is a quarter. Dallas’ salary cap is running out of space; the Cowboys need someone who can make vital changes and still keep everyone happy.
On Thursday, Aug 28, Jones made a decision that left Dallas fans in shambles. Micah Parsons, who was the Cowboys first-round pick in 2021 fresh out of Penn State, was traded to the Green Bay Packers. Parsons was a staple to the Dallas defense, but when he was traded, Jerry Jones stated, “Obviously, we did think it was in the best interest of our organization.” Micah has been a contender for defensive player of the year since his rookie season. The “Lion” was a staple to the defense, and this left many — if not all — Dallas fans no hope for the 2025 NFL season.
But, to play the devil’s advocate, when the Green Bay Packers ran a health screening on Parsons, it revealed that the linebacker had back issues. Thus meaning, the stud could irritate his back and be out for weeks at a time. He is not at full health, so some may agree with Jones that this decision was premeditated. In the trade, the Dallas Cowboys received Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round draft picks for the next two years. Cowboys fans are known to be “delusional,” but would it be crazy to say the Cowboys use those picks to trade up and get Archie Manning in the next draft—and have a strong quarterback behind Dak Prescott?
All of these questions fall back on the Jones dynasty. Even when Jerry retires, the team is likely going to be placed in the lap of his son Jerry Jr., instead of someone who eats, sleeps and breathes the Dallas Cowboys. Jones Jr. has been placed in the position to inherit the Dallas Cowboys, but what will change? We Dallas fans need change. We need it to be our year. The Cowboys need a win.
