Men’s Soccer
Owen Clearwaters was named to the Atlantic East Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
The Pacers traveled to Alfred University to take on the Saxons on Wednesday. The first half was slow, with only Alfred finding the back of the net in the 17th minute. Ryan Surowiec responded for the Pacers early in the second half, but the Saxons quickly retook the lead and finished the game off with a brace in the 90th minute as Marywood fell 3-1.
The Pacers were back home on Saturday for a match against the Ramapo College Roadrunners during Family Weekend. The Roadrunners were quick to spoil the fun, scoring two goals in quick succession in the first half. Marywood’s Drew Smith secured his first goal of the season shortly after halftime and brought the Pacers back into the game. Ramapo stood strong and put two more in the back of the net, felling Marywood 4-1 and handing the squad its third consecutive loss. Marywood drops to 2-4-0 on the season and will host Oswego State University on Wednesday.
Women’s Soccer
Caroline Walters was named to the AEC Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Marywood had a week to prepare for Stockton University to come into town on Saturday. The first half was a tough and physical affair, with neither team able to find a goal despite quality chances. The Pacers struck early in the second half as Carly Walters ripped a shot into the net from outside the box. Riley Bittenbender added a second just one minute later off a cross from Caroline Walters, who claimed assists for both goals. The Pacers’ stout defense held on for the rest of the match. Marywood took its first victory against Stockton in program history, giving the team a 4-1-0 record on the season. Marywood travels to Oswego State University for an evening game on Wednesday.
Field Hockey
Addison Marcin was named AEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Marywood was on the road for both games this week, the first of which took place on Tuesday against the University of Scranton. Scranton struck six minutes into the match, but Emma Toth scored off a pass from Dariane Jones to tie the game up in the third period. Scranton’s attack proved too strong, however, as Marywood’s cross-town rival put two on the board in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
The Pacers were back in action on Saturday against the No. 21 ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets. Marywood fell behind early once again, but Toth’s second goal of the season tied up the game before halftime. Rochester scored three goals in a dominant third period, and neither team was able to put any past the keepers in the fourth period as the Yellowjackets won 4-1.
Marywood was back in Rochester on Sunday to take on the St. John Fisher University Cardinals. The Pacers again trailed early, with the Cardinals scoring twice in the first period. St. John Fisher gradually added onto its lead, scoring once each in the second and third period. Toth notched her third goal of the season to cut into the Cardinals lead, but the Pacers would score no more and fall 4-1. Marywood drops to 2-4 on the season and will host Albright College on Wednesday.
Volleyball
Marywood swept the AEC weekly volleyball awards, with Genevieve Pollock and Catie Woolf winning Player and Specialty Player of the Week respectively.
The team opened the week on Tuesday against Albright College. The Pacers’ fortitude was tested early as Albright jumped out to a six-point lead. Marywood quickly rebounded and took the first set 25-21. The Pacers kept momentum going into the second and third sets, winning 25-18 and 25-21 respectively. Taylor Hallam led the team with 16.5 points. The win over Albright secured the team’s place in the history books, with the 6-0 start being the best since 1983.
Marywood traveled to Delaware Valley University on Thursday. The Pacers had a slow start, dropping the first set 21-25, but bounced back by winning the next three by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-18. Woolf led the squad with four aces and 26 digs as Marywood moved within one win of tying the program record.
The Pacers hosted a tri-match on Saturday with Penn State Harrisburg and Widener University. Marywood took on Penn State Harrisburg in the first leg, and it was the visitors who jumped out to a two-set lead. The Pacers battled back, nabbing the next two sets and forcing a fifth set. Marywood’s bid for history ended there, however, as Penn State Harrisburg took the fifth set 15-8, winning the match 3-2.
Marywood faced Widener University later that afternoon. The Pacers rebounded from the earlier loss, notching the program’s first ever victory over Widener in a three-set sweep. Pollock posted 14 kills and a .480 attack percentage, while Ayla Bransford grabbed 37 assists and 12 digs en route to her second double-double of the day. Marywood, now holding an 8-1 record, travels to Cedar Crest College on Tuesday.
Men’s Golf
Marywood’s men’s golf team opened its season on Tuesday at the Fall Pioneer Invitation hosted at William Paterson University. The Pacers finished sixth out of 13 teams and shot 334 (+54) on the day. The team was led by Donato Stridacchio, who hit an 81 (+11) to tie for 16th place. Luke Landis was just behind, hitting an 82 (+12) and tying for 27th place. The Pacers next compete on Monday at the Moravian Fall Invitational.
Women’s Golf
Marywood’s women’s golf team began its season on Saturday against King’s College and Wilkes University at the Wyoming Valley Country Club. The Pacers ended the day victorious, shooting 392, compared to Wilkes’ 396 score and King’s 446. Marywood’s next meet is on Wednesday at Stone Hedge Golf Course against Elizabethtown College and Mount Saint Mary College.
Cross Country
Marywood’s men’s and women’s cross country teams both competed at the Jasper Fall XC Invite on Saturday, held at Manhattan University. The women’s team finished 14th out of 16 teams at the event, with Paige Redman pacing the Pacers by finishing 101st in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 24:21.4. The men’s team finished in 12th out of 16 teams. Bryce Ryder led the way, finishing 18th in the 8,000 meter with a time of 25:37.2. Both teams next compete at Lehigh University on Oct. 4.
Swimming & Diving
Marywood hosted an alumni meet during Family Weekend on Saturday for both the men’s and women’s teams. Both teams start their seasons on Oct. 11 with a tri-meet against King’s College and Wilkes University.
