“A Minecraft Movie” was an absolute blast. I saw it opening night on April 4 with a couple of my friends and while the movie could have been better, it was not a bad movie. Minecraft is one of my most played games of all time, and I loved every ounce of the movie.
The overall plot of the movie is quite generic, the main characters end up in the Minecraft universe after finding a mysterious cube. Despite that, the main characters traverse through legendary Minecraft locations such as a village, a woodland mansion and the Nether.
In terms of the characters, Jack Black as the gaming icon Steve was phenomenal. With how goofy his personality is, he made the icon of Minecraft feel alive. Jason Momoa as “Garret the Garbage Man Garrison” was the other memorable character. He and Black were the unexpected duo that nobody knew we needed. He is this guy who runs a video game store, but is on the cusp of losing everything due to having no money.
There were also plenty of references scattered throughout the movie. The regular audience most likely won’t understand them, but people like me who have been playing for over 10 years, they hit close to home. There’s a small reference to the Minecraft YouTuber “Stampy” and his iconic “Lovely World” series. Another notorious YouTuber “TheDiamondMinecart” has a small cameo early on in the movie. And the YouTuber “Technoblade” also has a tribute halfway through the movie.
Finally, to address the elephant in the room, all the funny lines that Jack Black says. The most popular of them all being “Chicken Jockey!” There have been plenty of videos of people throwing popcorn everywhere in the theaters, but thankfully, at the showing our group went to, “chicken jockey” was simply given a great cheer and standing ovation. Other funny lines like “The Nether” or “They love crushin’ loaf” made the whole theatre erupt into applause.
This hands-down made “A Minecraft Movie” the best theatrical experience I have been a part of. There were also plenty of people dressed up in the stands, one girl was dressed up as a mob in-game, called the enderman. Another kid had a hoodie that zips up to be a creeper.
To end it off, there was also a post-credit scene. Perfectly setting up for a sequel, which looks more and more promising, considering the fact that this movie has already made $565 million at the box office.
Final Ranking: 8/10
