As springtime arrives here in the northeastern part of Pennsylvania, there are many places where college students can go to enjoy their last few weeks of school, or if they stay local, things to do over the summer break.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders: Whether you are a baseball fan or not, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Railriders games are a great way to spend an evening. PNC Field in Moosic is a top-notch facility, with activities in the fan zone and great food, like Chickie and Pete’s crab fries. There is truly something for everyone at https://www.milb.com/scranton-wb.
Nay Aug Park/Everhart: Nay Aug Park and the Everhart Museum are located on Mulberry Street in Scranton. The park is walkable with running trails, playgrounds and the park also has an overlook of a waterfall, a stream filled with wildlife. The Everhart Museum is filled with history and art, and is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Looking for more experiences at the museum? Check out their schedule of events, which is full of many things for college students to do, such as art workshops and lectures. https://nayaugpark.org/ https://everhart-museum.org/.
Lackawanna Coal Mine: The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour has been a staple of Scranton since 1985. The tour takes place in a retired mine in McDade Park. The tour takes you through what it would have been like as a coal miner in the 1900s. The tour is led by former miners or the children of former miners. During the tour, people will be placed in minecarts before going on foot for the rest of the tour. Visitors will also get to experience the tools and environment a miner would have gone through. https://www.lackawannacounty.org/government/departments/parks_and_recreation/coal_mine_tour.php.
Trolley and Train Museum: The Steamtown National Historic Site and Electric City Trolley Museum give people an experience of old steam engines, trains, and trolleys. Both museums offer tours of the buildings and what it’s like to keep trains and trolleys up-to-date and running, along with the history of the trains. Both of the museums are located at Cliff Street in Scranton, https://www.nps.gov/stea, https://www.ectma.org/.
Walking and Biking Trails in Northeast PA: There are many great biking and walking trails located throughout Northeastern PA, but the best one is the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. Stretching more than 70 miles, it is a scenic trail alongside the Lackawanna River. If you are feeling adventurous, you can bike or hike the entire 70 miles, but if you aren’t looking for that big of a challenge, then you can hop on or off the trail at many of the trailheads located throughout the Scranton and Mid-Valley areas. Make sure to check out the entire trail map and all the trailheads at https://lhva.org/HeritageTrail.php.
