It was a historic night for primetime television this past Sunday. Comedian Nate Bargatze hosted the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, which recognize “excellence within various areas of television and emerging media.” Going into the evening, Apple TV’s “Severance” had the most nominations with a whopping 27, while HBO Max’s “The Penguin” had 24. Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and HBO Max’s “The White Lotus” tied at 23 nominations, with the former also tying the record for most nominations for a comedy series that was set just last year by “The Bear.”
Netflix’s “Adolescence” took home a total of eight Emmys. Most notably, Owen Cooper became the youngest actor to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie thanks to his performance in the drama. In his acceptance speech, he had an encouraging message for the world’s dreamers: “[T]onight proves that, if you listen and you focus and you step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”
Another man to make history in one of the supporting actor categories was Tramell Tillman of “Severence” fame. In what was his first Emmy nomination, Tillman became the first Black man to ever win the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series trophy. While accepting the honor, he gave a special thank you to his mother: “My first acting coach was tough, y’all, but all great mothers are. Mama, you were there for me when no one else was and no one else would show up. Your loving kindness stays with me, and this is for you.”
Seth Rogen made his own history by winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He also tied the record for most individual wins in a single night thanks to the stellar performance of his show “The Studio” (co-created with Evan Goldberg). The comedy brought home a record-breaking 13 Emmys, including the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, and set the record for most wins by a comedy series that was previously held by “The Bear.” During his speech for his Outstanding Lead Actor win, Rogen said,“This is amazing. I could not wrap my head around this happening that I literally prepared nothing. I’ve never won anything in my life.” What a night to start winning!
Other winners from this year’s Emmys were HBO Max’s “The Pitt” for Outstanding Drama Series, Noah Wyles of “The Pitt” for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Jean Smart of “Hacks” for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Cristin Milioti of “The Penguin” for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series and Stephen Graham of “Adolescence” for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series.
