Drag Bingo 2024

Last night Marywood Activities Counsel hosted their second annual Drag Bingo event at The Theater at North here in Scranton. In conjunction with both Johnson College and Lackawanna College, the event featured the 7th runner up for season 11 of Drag Race, Miss Shuga Cain. During an interview with The Wood Word Shuga spoke of her favorite moments from being on season 11 of Drag Race, with that being the gymnastics challenge she did along with the other contestants and the elaborate set and choreography. During Marywood’s show, Shuga spent the night calling bingo numbers, or “shade” numbers as she called them, while students used their phones with digital bingo cards. She also danced and lip synced for two numbers, an Ariana Grande compilation for the opening act, and a Taylor Swift compilation for the closing act. During the closing act Shuga Cain came down into the audience and encouraged everyone to dance with her. This event was part of Marywood’s Inclusion week, led by Skylar Gagnon, a senior speech pathology major. When asked what went into making this event and the rest of inclusion week happen, Skylar spoke about Marywood’s Pacer Pledge campaign that is focused on “the togetherness of campus” and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. To cap off inclusion week comedian Hayden Kristal will be speaking on Monday about accessibility as well. Director of Student Engagement Kevin Farrell spoke to The Wood Word about finding Shuga Cain as well as the location. He said that the decision to have it held at The Theater at North made sense for its size and centrality to all three schools participating in the Drag Bingo show. The school did provide bussing to the location for those who could not transport themselves. When asked about why shows like this are important to students, Art Therapy major Andre Vizcarrondo spoke about how having a Catholic university support an event that features LGBTQ culture can make students in the community feel as though their perspective matters and that they are welcomed here at Marywood. He explained how though he may have felt unsure about coming to a Catholic school, he has felt more support here than expected. He also mentioned that even if you are not interested in the artistry of drag, you can still come out, have a fun time, and win a bingo prize.
