Marywood University joins in the national effort in providing Release the Light Sexual Assault Awareness Program on Wednesday, April 14 in the Fireplace Lounge Nazareth Student Center from 12 – 2:00 p.m. The purpose is to increase student and community awareness for the need of violence prevention and reducing incidents of sexual assault on college campuses and in the community.
April is designated as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month and communities and colleges across the nation will be joining together against crimes of sexual abuse. This is Marywood University’s ninth annual Release the Light event.
This year’s program will be a food and information fair, with written materials, music, and speakers available to cover topics such as sexual assault prevention, safeguards against acquaintance rape, the importance of consent and mutual respect in relationships, and statistics about sexual violence. Community and student organizations, as well as academic departments will be represented including Lackawanna County’s Women’s Resource Center, Marywood University’s Counseling/Student Development Center, Peers on Wellness, Marywood Campus Security, the Caritas Social Work Club, the Diversity United Club, the Music Therapy Club, the Graduate Student Council, Chi Sigma lota, Women’s Studies and Art Therapy Association, and many more! Again this year, we will have a “Let Your Feet Speak” mile walk through campus as the second part of the program.
Marywood University’s Chartwells Food Service and other local community businesses will provide food donations.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information on the Release the Light program to raise awareness of sexual assault, contact Marywood University’s Counseling/Student Development Center at (570) 348-6245.
