Wednesday evening, Marywood women’s soccer shut out Gwynedd Mercy University, 2-0. The Griffins fell to 7-8-1 and the Pacers moved to 14-1 and 5-0 in Atlantic East Conference play. The Pacers won to continue their 12-game winning streak.
“It’s one of our best records, I feel like we are having a really good season,” senior midfielder Caroline Walters said.
In the sixth minute of the game the Walters sisters connected for the first goal of the game, with Caroline assisting her sister Carly Walters.
“I think we move together very well after playing together for so long,” Caroline Walters added
The goal was Carly Walters’ 15th of the season, leading both Marywood and the Atlantic East Conference, while Caroline’s assist was her seventh of the year, the most for the Pacers and second in the AEC.
In the 17th minute, Riley Bittenbender set up Caroline Walters, who netted the ball making the score 2-0.
Head coach Richard Owens added onto Caroline Walters’ performance saying, “She will definitely be our offensive player of the game for our team. She’s a danger for any team and we thankfully have her back.”
The main focus for the Pacers was “to not give up goals, we do a very good job of that and it was our 10th shutout of the year,” Owens said.
The win marked the 12th in a row, a Marywood women’s soccer program record. Despite the record-breaking streak, the focus hasn’t changed for the Pacers.
“I don’t worry about the winning streak, we focus on one game at a time,” Owens said.
The Pacers are having one of their best seasons in program history. With 14 wins, Marywood is just one win shy of matching a program best for single-season wins, set in 2010 and matched last year.
“We have always had great team chemistry, we always do team bonding together and it transfers over to the field,” Caroline Walters said.
The Pacers return to action on the road Saturday against Pratt University.
