Students, faculty and staff gathered in-person on Wednesday, September 9 for the 107th annual opening liturgy and picnic.

During the liturgy mass, university President Sister Mary Persico, IHM, Ed.D, welcomed the new students and faculty, as well as those returning to campus. Persico also spoke of overcoming challenges by working together.

“Together we can make what seems impossible in the world possible,” said Persico.

Persico also addressed the necessity of masks, saying that those present were required to wear their masks properly throughout the entire liturgy.

“We do this for one another,” said Persico.

Chaplain Rev. Joseph Elston also spoke during the liturgy about the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in daily life, and asked students to consider the difference the Holy Spirit could make.

“May we go forth and glorify God in our lives,” said Elston.

The singing during the liturgy was led by Graduate Nutrition and Dietetics Student Annie Heyen, and accompanied by student and faculty musicians.

Persico closed the liturgy mass by encouraging the Marywood community to attend the annual opening picnic, saying, “Linger and enjoy each other’s company.”
