After earning their first victory of the young season, the Pacers were back to work, as St. John Fisher University traveled to Scranton. Marywood earned an early corner, but was thwarted. Just over a minute over in, the Cardinals were in a similar position and had a similar result. The Pacers chugged down the field, earning a penalty corner and capitalizing, as Dariane Jones smacked home the opening goal. Both offenses were muted for most of the remainder of the first period, before Cydney Lahr doubled the advantage. In the second period, Marywood rattled a triplet of shots but the lead remained the same as Marywood remained up 2-0 at the half.
The Pacers came out of the break scorching, as Corrin Hasty scored her third goal of the game, followed by Jones netting a pair to collect the hat trick. The Cardinals were finally able to rally shots off but the Pacers’ defense held tough, as the lead remained the same at the end of the third. Maria Tomada extended the lead in the first couple minutes of the fourth period. The Cardinals pressured the Marywood defense late in the fourth, earning two corners and firing shot after shot, but the Pacers held onto the shutout, 6-0.
Men’s Soccer
After suffering a season opening loss, the Pacers hosted the Keystone College Giants. The Pacers only needed 43 seconds, as junior Jason Tordy scored the first goal for Marywood on the season. The Giants fought for an equalizer, taking five shots in a seven-minute span. The Pacers flipped the field, going on the attack, being denied by the woodwork and the keeper. In the 25th minute, Alex Visha was able to net the Pacers’ second goal of the half. Marywood’s offense was pressuring the Giants’ defense, but were rejected of extending the lead. This led to a counterattack from Keystone, which would culminate with a goal from freshman Zamani Munthali. Both teams were able to send another shot, but the score remained 2-1 going into halftime.
Keystone opened the second half on the attack, failing to convert a shot and being ruled offside on another run. Marywood was able to thread through the Keystone defense, finishing with a Jack Forbes goal. Shortly after, the Pacers earned a corner, with Danny Gomez driving home another Pacer goal, after Kyle Falcon’s attempt hit the crossbar. After some chippy defense ensued in the next 10 minutes, Marywood was on the attack again, with Gomez finishing his second goal of the game. The rest of the match was filled with physical defense, resulting in three yellow cards. Nonetheless, Marywood notched its first victory 5-1.
Following the win, Marywood was on the road for the first time of the year, traveling to FDU-Florham to face the Devils. Falcon fired the first shot, but FDU-Florham was able to deny and go on the offensive themselves, with Drilon Toska putting the Devils ahead. Each squad traded runs of offense, with the score remaining. In the 29th minute, the Pacers began a run of pressure that resulted in three shots, two corner kicks and an equalizing Ethan Vogt goal. The rest of the half was all Devils, though the tie remained into the break.
Marywood had two early shots with no success, before the Devils dominated the field, planting themselves in the Pacers third of the field but were also declined of reclaiming the lead. Marywood earned a corner kick just before the 70th minute that led to a go ahead goal from Hayden Slater. The Devils looked to answer quickly, earning multiple corners. The Pacers committed a foul in the penalty box and the Devils took full advantage of the blunder, as Irfan Kermalli stepped up and sank the penalty shot to tie the match. The Devils kept on the attack but the Pacers’ defense didn’t break. Marywood countered, getting down the field and taking a late lead, thanks to Drew Smith. FDU-Florham held possession for the closing minutes of the match but were unable to reknot the game, as the Pacers tallied another win on the season, 3-2.
Women’s Soccer
Looking to remain undefeated, the Pacers were at Lancaster Bible College to face the Chargers. It was evident early that Marywood would dominate as Josephine Sorce scored her first goal of the season in the fourth minute. Both teams had spurts of offense, before Marywood struck again in the 26th minute, as Rylee Alston scored off an assist from Riley Mulherin. The 2-0 lead was short-lived, as Sorce scored her second goal of the game six minutes after. The Pacers continued their craving for extending the lead as the half closed.
It only took slightly over a minute for the Pacers to extend the lead yet again, as Alston returned the favor to Mulherin, setting her up for Marywood’s fourth goal of the day. Marywood didn’t settle, looking to continue to grow the lead, forcing the Chargers into a costly own goal in the 76th minute. Despite Marywood’s relentless attack, the lead remained 5-0 as time expired, clinching another victory.
The Pacers were traveling once again, this time to Oneonta, N.Y. to face the Dragons of SUNY Oneonta in a two-day, mini tournament. The Dragons came out fiery, taking a shot and earning a duo of corners in the first minute-plus. Both squads spent the first half trading blows, with neither team’s keeper allowing the net to be harmed. As halftime rolled around, goose eggs were still on the scoreboard.
The second half was a copy of the first, with Genevieve Morrison and Bryanna Meehan serving as brick walls for their teams. As the final five minutes of regulation time rolled around, it seemed that neither team would concede. This was until the Dragons rattled off consecutive shots in the 87th minute. Morrison swatted both attempts, keeping the game equal. As time was about to expire, Britlyn Higgins was able to find Caroline Walters to finally break the deadlock and allow Marywood to stay unbeaten, 1-0.
Following the Saturday victory, Marywood was pitted against the Hartwick College Hawks. Neither team could truly work into the opposing team’s third of the field, with Marywood earning two corners in the first 25 minutes and neither team getting a shot off. This was until Millie Caldon fired home a goal, the first of her collegiate career and the first goal conceded by the Pacers on the season. Marywood was the aggressor the remainder of the half, but had nothing to show for, going into halftime trailing.
The second half was more of Marywood working tirelessly to tie the game, earning five corner kicks, but having nothing to show for. After a little tit-for-tat from the Hawks and Pacers, Marywood was on the offensive again, with time ticking down. Marywood earned two corners in the closing five-plus minutes. However, the Pacers received the same result as the rest of the game, as no goal was scored and the Pacers fell unceremoniously, 1-0.
Volleyball
After splitting the opening tri-match, the Pacers were back to work, hosting the Cairn University Highlanders. Cairn started with a four point lead, the smallest that the Highlanders would possess in the first set, as the Pacers were outmatched 25-17. The Pacers kept the second set closer, trailing 9-7 early. The Highlanders proceeded to rally six straight points and the lead was too insurmountable for the Pacers to overcome, falling 25-16. Marywood took an early 2-1 lead in the third set. It disappeared rapidly, as Cairn stole the lead and extended it to 13-5. The Pacers were able to bring the third set within three, trailing 13-10, but the set quickly fell apart, as the Highlanders would take the third set 25-13, sweeping Marywood.
Hosting its second tri-match of the season, Marywood kicked the day off with Keystone College. After allowing the first point, the Pacers went up 5-1. Both teams would exchange runs, leading to a tie at 12 all. The Giants would take over, running away with the lead and first set victory, 25-18. Marywood looked destined to take the second set, starting with an 11-7 edge. The Giants would have a seven-point swing, claiming the lead. Marywood would bring the set back within one, but the Giants would once again create separation and take the second set 25-18. Keystone looked to make quick work of the Pacers in the third set, going ahead 20-7. Marywood would go on two separate scoring spurts, bringing the set to 23-20, advantage Giants. The Giants would slam the door shut, winning the third set 25-20, handing the Pacers another sweep.
In hopes of salvaging the day, Marywood was up against the Warriors of Lycoming College. Lycoming handles the Pacers in the first set, 25-14. The second set was even less competitive than the first, as the Warriors were one set away from the sweep, 25-10. The third set started with a seven point run from the Warriors, eventually extending the lead to 22-6. Marywood was able to trim the deficit, but it was too much to come back from, as Lycoming handed the Pacers its third straight sweep, 25-12.
